Ladies Only Basic Defensive Handgun – Female Instructor
Basic Defensive Handgun is an informational and hands-on class in the use of a handgun in self-defense. Jeff Cooper, the legendary founder of Gunsite Academy, is quoted as having said, “Owning a handgun doesn’t make you armed any more than owning a guitar makes you a musician.” This class is meant to address that issue by providing some of the basic knowledge and skills that will contribute to your being effectively armed.
Firearms handling safety, range safety, and home safety are covered in detail. We summarize the legal, psychological, and law-enforcement response issues involved in using a firearm for self-defense. (And for those wanting more information, these topics are covered in extreme detail in a separate Indy Arms classroom course, Fundamentals of Armed Self-Defense.) We practice basic handling, operation, and shooting skills with training guns, “dry” in the classroom. And the course concludes with live-fire session on the range that also allows you to shoot various types and configurations of firearms.
This course will consist of about 2 ½ hours of classroom material and practice, and about 1 ½ hours of live-fire range time. The class is nominally four hours in length, but sometimes runs a bit longer, based on student questions. Carrying, drawing, re-holstering, and the associated equipment for this, are covered in a separate 8 hour Indy Arms course, Tactical Handgun.
The class will include the use of a chosen rental gun at no additional cost, if desired, and several other firearms will be available during the live-fire portion. Fifty rounds of .22 and ten rounds of 9mm ammunition will be included with the class. Students will receive a detailed course handout and additional information on available resources.
