Introductory Self-Defense Shotgun

December 3, 2017 @ 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm EST

Introduction to Defensive Shotgun

Introduction to Defensive Shotgun is an informational and hands-on class in the use of the modern pump or semi-automatic shotgun as a home defense weapon.  A shotgun is an extremely effective, diverse, and psychologically intimidating self-defense weapon.  But there are many misconceptions about it, and it is sometimes as intimidating to its users as it might be to an attacker.  Shotgun operating systems tend to behave differently than most other firearms, and need to be understood and practiced.  And shotguns can fire an enormously broad range of ammunition types, not all of which are suitable in some situations.

Shotgun handling safety, range safety, and safe storage are addressed.  We will go through the basic operating systems (pump and semi-automatic) commonly used in self-defense shotguns.  We will practice basic handling, operation, loading and unloading with dummy ammunition in the classroom, and proper mounting of the shotgun.  The course concludes with live-fire session on the range, shot at various distances and speeds, and with different types of shotgun ammunition.

This course will consist of about 2 ½ hours of classroom material and practice, and about 1 ½ hours of live-fire range time. The class is nominally four hours in length, but sometimes runs a bit longer, based on student questions.

Students typically fire about 50 rounds of ammunition.  Typically about 35 rounds of birdshot, 10 buckshot, and 5 slugs.
